It has never been easy for lawyers advising private clients to keep up to speed with developments in capital taxation and estate planning. And with current Inland Revenue (or HMRC, as they are now called) attitudes to tax avoidance – as evidenced by the Pre-owned Assets regime, in particular - it is often difficult to know precisely what is the best advice to give. An awareness and understanding of tax issues as they occur is essential to that process.

On 19 July Matthew Hutton began what is to be a quarterly series on such developments. The next EPU presentation is scheduled for 3 November. Based on his well-received quarterly Capital Tax Review (CTR), the presentation will cover decided cases, legislative changes, developments in HMRC practice and planning points – all with specific practical application. Each Issue of CTR contains about 25 such points in the areas of Capital Gains Tax, Inheritance Tax, Stamp Duties and Miscellaneous. Matthew will take a selection of about 12 of these for his presentation – though the balance will be contained in the Notes for reference.
