Second Set of Advanced Internet Studies for LawyersAuthor: Delia Venables CPD: 5 hours Level: advanced
DESCRIPTION
Five Internet Studies for experienced internet users exploring topics with legal relevance.
Study One - Most Important Legal Sites in Europe and particularly in Ireland The Study looks at the most important sites in Europe - the Europa site, the European Commission, the European Parliament, the Council of Europe, the European Court of Human Rights (particularly the searchable database of Human Rights Opinions) and the International Court of Justice. The study then looks at Irish legal sites in particular.
Study Two - Most Important Legal Sites across the World The Study starts with the Australian Legal Information Institute (AustLII) which has become the model worldwide for the dissemination of free legal information, including the British and Irish Legal Information Institute, BAILII. It then looks at important sites in the USA and also gives some tips as to how to find Legal Information in other countries, using a number of worldwide legal "compendium" sites.
Study Three - Specifically Scottish Legal Sites The Scottish Parliament has been in operation for several years now and the study looks at the way it is presenting Parliamentary Information. The study also looks at Scottish Legislation and the Scottish Courts Website. The Scottish Law Society site is covered as well as the Scottish Advocates site, other Governmental sites and sources of Legal News.
Study Four - Legal Resources Provided by Barristers Several barristers and chambers are now providing very useful legal resources on the web. These include case summaries and reports on employment law, tax law, family law, harassment law, regulatory law and Human Rights.
Study Five - Marketing on the Web In the early days of the Internet, it was enough just to have a web site. Now, with so many firms and chambers on the web, it is increasingly difficult to be found on the search engines. The study looks at how to build the right keywords into the site, whether special domain names are helpful and how to register the site in the search engines. The study also looks at some of the new marketing sites, which charge firms a fee to be included.
SUITABLE FOR The Studies qualify for CPD hours as follows:
*Solicitors
Law Society of England & Wales - 5 CPD hours
*Barristers (New Practitioners/Established Practitioners Programme - other CPD activity courses) - accredited for 5 hours
